Three MBTA kinegrams in action, representing Brigham Circle, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Prudential Center (from left to right). This video was taken during our in class critique, with the black screen hanging from the ceiling so that anyone could walk by and experience the effect live.
This video was taken right after we achieved the kinegram effect at scale for the first time. We had completed the math and the physical setup fairly early, but we found that even with some tweaks we couldn't get the effect to come through at this size and distance. We eventually found that using the laser cutter to cut the screen and bars out of Bristol Board burned a lot of excess material, causing the math and scaling work to no longer hold up. Once realizing this, we were able to measure the amount of material lost, and widen the separation between these bars accordingly, allowing the screen to finally work as intended.
